Challenges:

1.There were many financial terms which should be kept consistent in translation.

2.Taiwanese linguists had to be used, as different financial terms were used in Chinese mainland, Taiwan and Hong Kong to refer to a same meaning.

3.The source documents had a lot of massive, long sentences that were challenging to the linguist.

4.A tight schedule required that the proofreading had to be carried out in parallel with the translation.

Yijie assigned two top Taiwanese linguists and a senior proofreader to collaborate on the case, and used an online CAT tool for consistency of expressions and terms.

The long sentences presented the biggest difficulty during the translation. As a typical contract written in English, complicated by the indigestible financial language, the job came with elaborate sentences with sophisticated structures that left nothing to chance. Subordinate clauses appeared every now and again to complement the main clauses, making many sentences extremely long, of which one was up to 361 words. The linguists were facing a difficulty in both understanding the source sentences and building the target ones.

The Yijie’s team collaborated closely and delivered the translation as scheduled, yet the story did not end here. The customer gave feedback, mainly about the vocabulary, four times within the week following the delivery. The feedback was then forwarded to the Taiwanese linguists who either answered the customer’s comments or revised the translation accordingly until the customer was satisfied.
